Getting a tattoo etched seemed like a good idea at the time, but now that blast from the past on your back or tribal band around your wrist and arm may seem like a bit of body art you could live without, then you are not alone. People often want to get rid of their tattoos, but tattoo removal is a daunting process.

Tattoo removal once meant gambling low odds of success on a high risk of scarring and pain. However, as more and more people look to reversethis deeply embedded ink deposits technology too has kept pace with improved methods of safety and efficacy.

The Q-switched tattoo removal machine is considered the best for removal of unwanted tattoos and that too without scarring. During the treatment session, pulses of light from the laser are directed onto the tattoo which breaks up the pigment into smaller particles. Over the next several weeks the body’s immune system removes the ink from the skin. The Q-switched laser can effectively treat dark black, green and blue pigments. Patients should expect to come back for several treatments to achieve expected results. Q-switched lasers are of two types, Q-switched ruby and Q-switched Nd-YAG. These both lasers are equally good in removing tattoos, with a difference only in their wavelength.

PicoSure is the latest addition to painless tattoo removal techniques. This laser is uniquebecause it’s the first picoseconds laser on the market, delivering ultra-short bursts of energy delivered to the skin in just trillionth of a second creating an intense photomechanical effect that shatters the tattoo ink into tiny particles. The 532nm wavelength is designed to effectively treat red, yellow and orange ink. Fewer PicoSure treatment sessions are needed as compared with other laser treatments. While PicoSure was first used for removal of tattoos, newer research shows that it can be used for the treatment of acne scar, skin discolouration and ageing.

PicoWay is another painless tattoo removal technique that uses dual wavelength to effectively remove tattoos and can be used on a wide variety of tattoo types and different skin tones. It is also effective on all tattoo designs and inks that might not have responded to previous tattoo removal techniques. As compared to other lasers, the setting in PicoWay can be customised according to skin type. It effectively breaks up tiny ink particles creating a photoacoustic effect making it easier for the body to eliminate and provide more effective treatment. Since it uses fast pulses, you will feel minimal discomfort throughout the process.

Intense pulsed light therapy is another great painless tattoo removal technique. It is a non-invasive and non-ablative light treatment that utilises high-intensity pulses of broad spectrum to effectively remove an unwanted tattoo. During the treatment session, tattoo is covered in a special anaesthetic gel, prism is placed over it and a light emitting wand which is attached to IPL machine is passed over the area to be treated.  The light, when passed through the prism, hits the dark tattoo pigments thereby breaking it apart and allows the lymphatic system to clear away the shattered and smaller pigment particles. The closer the tattoo to your heart the quicker the clearing process occurs, meaning that tattoos on ankle and wrists take longer to be removed. IPL works best on people with light skin tone because IPL therapy targets the dark pigment in the dermis. The greater the colour discrepancy between the tattoo ink and surrounding skin, the more effective is the treatment. People with darker skin tone who undergo IPL treatment are at risk for hypopigmentation or localised permanent loss of skin colour.

Tattoo removal creams offer an affordable technique to tattoo removal. The cream is rubbed on the skin, which eventually causes the tattoo to fade away. However, this procedure is 100% painless and will not leave any scar, but requires a long term application and is not as effective as laser and IPL therapy. Tattoo removal creams have substances that bleach the skin and the chemicals never completely pierce through to reach the tattoo, but the stuff that manages to leak through can fade. Since the tattoo removal creams have bleach-like substance, repetitive use will irritate the skin and possibly cause complications. If you already worry about your skin health, then stay away from the tattoo removal cream.

Before you undergo your tattoo removal procedure, it’s absolutely imperative that you talk with your dermatologist to determine any potential side effects that you may endure as a result of the treatment.
